The Feldenkrais Method® was created by Moshé Feldenkrais and is an educational experience/approach which explores how to improve the quality, range and comfort with which you move.

Since we are moving every moment of our lives, becoming aware of how we move also improves what we are able to do. The method develops the ability to learn new movements and this can be applied to learning any new skill and learning itself.

The method is taught in two forms:in group Awareness Through Movement classes and one-to-one Functional Integration lessons.

In both forms you will be invited to engage in a pleasurable and playful process through which, simply by paying attention to physical sensations of movement, you will develop a richer and greater knowledge of yourself in action.

How does it work?

You develop in flexibility and strength not through stretching or exerting yourself in any way, but by experiencing slowly and gently in a way that educates your whole self to move in a more coordinated, efficient and graceful way. The more you can feel and sense about how you are moving, the more this feeds back through the nervous system and the more effective your movement becomes – you find you will let go of unnecessary habits and patterns of holding that have accumulated over your entire life. Improvements become spontaneously useful in everyday life.

The Feldenkrais Method® uses movement as a sensory measure, employing developmental movement patterns experienced in the growing infant who learns how to gain flexibility, strength and mobility. In the adult patterns of use occur which can inhibit and limit movement. These patterns that we use unconsciously in adult life can be re-orientated to improve function.

Benefits include:

  • Improved balance & co-ordination
  • Healthy recovery from injury
  • Strengthening of a debilitated nervous system
  • Relief from tension & muscular strain
  • Reduction of pain & limitated movement
  • Maximising performance
  • Enjoyment & confidence
  • Moving with greater ease in daily activities
